Finchum found himself on the outside of his BDI Racing teammate Plott on the final restart with a shot at shocking the Pro Challenge scene with a win in his first series start. When Plott bobbled on the restart, Finchum gave it all he could to win the race despite a severe toe-out problem from earlier contact.
“Our toe was out right there at the end, but I knew I had to get by (Plott) at the start,” said Finchum. “We took the lead on the restart from turn four to the start-finish line, but in turn one the toe gave out and two of them got by me. Then after that, I knew I could get back by one, but I didn't know about Edwards. I was able to get by King there on the last lap and just ran out of time to get the leader. But still, this was an awesome night for us.”
Plott had arguably his best run in the series going for much of the 50-lap feature, but at the end, he could not get enough out of his #4 Chevy to earn his first Pro Challenge win.
“I thought I had it wrapped up and then the caution came out. I was bummed,” said Plott. “Then sure enough on the restart, it didn't go into gear. I pulled it back and it just didn't go in gear.
“We just had a lack of luck tonight. Everything was going good except for the last two laps. I had an awesome car. Bond (Suss, Crew Chief) set it up perfect for my driving style and all the guys at BDI helped me out so much. I couldn't have asked for a better car.”
Still, despite the woes on the final restart, Plott was able to salvage a fifth-place finish.
“I wished we would've finished in the top-three, but I'm glad we were able to finish fifth.”
Meghan Dillner was quickly moving her way through the field to join her BDI Racing teammates at the front of the field early on after starting seventh. While she battled inside the top-10 on lap 14, several leaders tangled, sending cars scrambling behind them. Dillner was close to having the entire melee cleared, but another competitor came down the track and into the door of the #51, sending the 15-year-old driver hard into the inside retaining wall and up into the air. The incident ended Dillner's shot at a podium finish.
“I was so disappointed that we got collected in that wreck,” said Dillner. “We just about had it cleared, too. My spotter told me to go low, which was the only way to get through the cars that were slowing down and sideways, and everything was fine until the #34 came down the track and into my door.
“Dustin (Archer, Dillner's Crew Chief) gave me a great car. We were faster than the leader in those opening laps until the wreck. It stinks that we've got to put the Buffalo Wild Wings Chevy back together before Orlando , but I know we'll be back and we'll run well because our team's run well there a bunch before.”
BDI Racing drivers Meghan Dillner and Kyle Plott will return to the track where the team already has two poles and a victory in two starts this season, Orlando SpeedWorld this Saturday, October 18th. The race will be the third of the four-race Pro Challenge Playoff Series, where both drivers will look to secure top-five point finishes and Dillner will be out to gain points in the Rookie of the Year standings. Finchum will return to the Pro Challenge Series next month at Peach State Speedway in Georgia.
